DIY Christmas Ornaments for Kids
Oh, this is so much fun! During the holiday season, you can get the whole family involved with all kinds of DIY ornaments and Christmas ornament crafts. It’s a wonderful way to keep everyone busy on those short, chilly days, and it’s a great way to bring extra holiday spirit into your home. In this blog post, I’m excited to share some of the ornaments we’ve made that are perfect for both little ones and older kids. And the best part? You can join in on the fun too! Making great christmas ornaments together is a fantastic way to create holiday memories and spread the Christmas cheer even further. So, let’s dive into the list of ideas that will make your season even more joyful!
Bake Gingerbread Cookies
Bake some gingerbread cookies! You’ll need cookie cutters in different shapes and sizes, plus some gingerbread dough. The real fun comes after baking, when you get to decorate them however you like. If you want to go a step further, you can make a gingerbread house! You can bake one from scratch, or make it super easy by buying a ready-made house to assemble at home. Either way, it’s a fun, festive activity that’s perfect for doing with kids—or just enjoying a little holiday creativity yourself.

Cutting Your Own Christmas Trees and Decorating Them
One day, my kids and I were taking a little walk around our backyard when we noticed some small fir trees growing here and there. That’s when the idea hit me—what if they each had their very own little Christmas tree? I asked if they wanted one, and they got so excited! They picked their trees, and I cut them down with my secateurs.

It didn’t take long before they were running around the house, gathering decorations to dress up their trees. Some were handmade ornaments, and others were store-bought. A really sweet moment happened when my daughter came up with an idea to help her little brother—she made a paper star for the top of his tree. Then her older brother found another decoration she had made before and put it on the top of his tree. Both paper ornaments were made out of creativity, which I love to see! These are just some easy christmas ornaments she made!

To keep the fir tree standing nice and steady, my son came up with a pretty clever idea (with my help). We grabbed a bucket, added some stones for weight, and filled it with water. Then we cut a hole in the lid, snapped it back on, and slid the tree right through the opening so it reached the bottom. Super simple—and the tree stays perfectly upright! It’s a fun little project, especially for younger kids who love decorating Christmas trees. And while you’re at it, try making your own paper Christmas ornaments. There’s something extra special about hanging decorations you made yourself!

Perler Bead Christmas Ornaments
A few years ago, my kids were completely obsessed with making perler bead Christmas tree ornaments—and they made so many of them! These homemade ornaments have stayed with us over the years and are almost enough to decorate an entire tree. They’re just one of the many fun and creative ideas for making your own Christmas ornaments. Plus, working with perler beads is a fantastic way for kids to practice their fine motor skills while having fun.

For younger children, I recommend using larger perler beads—they’re much easier to handle and still look beautiful on the tree. The tiny beads can be very frustrating for a toddler!

By the way, these little fun crafts make wonderful gifts too. Your child can give them to friends or family members, and it just feels extra special when the gift is something they made themselves.
Coloring Christmas Printables
A fun and easy craft for kids is printing ready-made pictures that they can color. One great option comes from the blog Free Printable Nativity Coloring Pages. This is an easy project for older kids, and it’s a nice way for them to practice their handwriting too.

Another Christmas craft idea comes from the blog Creating Happy Home Memories, which features printable Christmas ornaments. These crafts are perfect for decorating a real Christmas tree or crafting a cardboard tree like we did. Take a look at the picture—it was so fun to make!

These homemade Christmas ornaments are just a few ideas from our home to yours! Pick your favorite colors and create a beautiful, colorful ornament to decorate your tree. It’s such a fun way to make your holiday décor feel extra personal!
Decorate 4 Advent Candles
This one is super easy! You just need four candles and numbers for each week of Advent—four weeks before Christmas. The kids can place the numbers on the candles, and then everyone can decorate them together with whatever you like! In this case, I cut small pieces from a fir tree and used them to decorate the candles. What other ornament ideas would you suggest for your candles?

Create Your Own Christmas Cards
This Christmas, we’re being extra mindful about how we spend our money—because let’s be honest, it disappears way too quickly otherwise! One easy (and super fun) way to save is to make your own Christmas cards. Encourage your kids to get creative and come up with their own decorations. Use whatever you already have at home: glitter glue, crayons, scissors, and papers in different colors and thicknesses. You can even add some cotton to make little snowy details—just stick it on with a bit of hot glue. The sky’s the limit, so let your imagination take over!
Have the children add these Christmas cards to a gift they’re giving to a friend or family member, or let them give one on its own—it will be a beautiful gift that’s sure to warm the hearts of whoever receives it. I especially love when my kids make something from the heart and give it to me personally. It makes my own heart feel so warm and happy!
I hope you’ll have Happy Holidays!
No matter what activities you choose to do at home, make sure you’re having fun and creating your own cozy Christmas traditions. And as always, be sure your children are under adult supervision when using hot glue, scissors, or anything else that needs a little extra care.
This is the time of year when we all want to slow down and enjoy cozy indoor activities. My hope is that these holiday ornaments bring joy to you and your kids while you create them together.
