The free printables are good for practicing fine motor skills and developing hand-eye coordination. The younger kids can talk about their emotions, make funny faces and demonstrate the smiley face, happy face etc. This is a great way to talk about different emotions and explain how it looks when someone is sad, happy, angry or confused.

Create a Deeper Study with Older Children

For older children you can make this even a deeper study. Talk about the different types of emojis. For example, what feelings might be behind the different types of facial expressions? What is the person feeling when he or she expresses the smiley face, sad face or the angry face? What has happened inside their hearts? Have the free printable emoji coloring pages beside you when you discuss this.

We can for sure affect each others feelings. What we say, how we say it and do, affects others in one way or another. We can make someone really happy. But also, we can make someone really sad. In Proverbs 15:1 it says “A soft answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.” It is clear that our words can have a bad outcome and make people sad.

Questions to discuss about feelings and how to make each other happy:

  1. When was the last time I was happy?
  2. What made me so happy?
  3. When was the last time I made someone else happy?
  4. What made him or her so happy about it?
  5. When was the last time I was sad?
  6. Why was I sad?
  7. Have I made someone sad in my life?
  8. What could have been the reason for that?
  9. What can I do to make myself and others around me happy?

Emotions in the Bible

The Bible talks a lot about feelings and emotions and how to make each other happy. In 1 Corinthians 13:4-7, it says, “Love suffers long and is kind; love does not envy; love does not parade itself, is not puffed up; does not behave rudely, does not seek its own, is not provoked, thinks no evil; does not rejoice in iniquity, but rejoices in the truth; bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.” In other words, love is one of the things that make us happy.

“Love does no harm to a neighbor…” (Romans 13:10). The love that God talkes about does not hurt us or other people. We are safe when we are with God. That is our goal, to be where He is. At Jesus feet. The peace we have when we have Jesus in our hearts, will show up on our faces. What might that facial expression look like?

1 John 4:7-8 says: “Beloved, let us love one another, for love is of God; and everyone who loves is born of God and knows God. He who does not love does not know God, for God is love.”

Practice Thankfulness: Change Your Life

What turnes eveything around, is when we start practicing thankfulness and have the right perspective in life. There is so much negativitythat we can allow us to think about. But that does not make us happy. And unfortunately, it is very contagious too. What we want is to practise and push ourselves to see the positive things in life.

In 1 Thessalonians 5:18 it says, “in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.” I do not know about you, but when I practice thankfulnes I feel much better. It is as if something gets clearer in my mind. I believe God wants us to have that kind of thinking. A clear and a happy mind.

Whenever you find yourself in a negative thinking do this:

  1. Take a deep breath.
  2. Acknowledge the negative thought.
  3. Let the negative thought go if it is not for any help in your life.
  4. Push forward with a true, positive thought, that will replace that negative thought.
  5. Repeat if needed.

Remember that this takes time to develop. You need to exercise your thoughts. As much as you need to go to the gym on a regular basis. This is the same. In Ephesians 5:20, it says: “…giving thanks ALWAYS for all things to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ…”

Engage the Entire Family

Another creative way of learning about facial expressions and emotions is to make emoji drawing together with the entire family. Use the free printable coloring pages for giving ideas, but encourage every family member to come up with new emojis. Draw them on a piece of paper and discuss them afterwards. The kids could also create their own coloring book with their favorite emojis. This is much fun and engaging activity for the entire family.
