No-Bake Chocolate Date Energy Balls – Simple Recipe

This no-bake, easy recipe is a sweet treat for all ages! I love it — and so do my kids. What makes it even better is that it feels like a healthy treat, with no added sugar! It’s quick and easy to make, and also a fun way to involve the kids in the kitchen. For people like me who struggle with a chocolate craving, this is a great way to satisfy it in a more balanced and healthy way!

The recipe contains no refined sugar but is rich in natural sugars, fiber, and a variety of vitamins and minerals. There are a variety of dates out there, but Medjool dates are a great choice, as they’re softer and higher in moisture than regular dates. To make this recipe, you only need a handful of ingredients, with several optional additions you can switch up from time to time.

The type of nuts you can use in this recipe depends on the flavor you want. Cashews and almonds both have a mild flavor, while walnuts have a more pronounced, nutty taste. You can also use a mix of nuts if you prefer! My absolute favorite type of nut is almonds — and when you combine chopped almonds with chocolate, it tastes amazing! The great thing about nuts is that they also add some extra protein to your day.

I don’t know about you, but having wholesome goodness ready to take along for short trips with the kids or to serve when visitors come over is just amazing! I’m always looking for recipes that taste great while still using healthy ingredients that fuel me and give me energy throughout the day. Adding chocolate date energy bites as dessert on a regular Tuesday? Not bad — what do you think?

Simple Ingredients for Chocolate Date Balls Recipe

The wet ingredients:
  • Dates – I use fresh dates. Medjool dates are a great option.
  • Coconut Oil– I use organic virgin coconut oil.
  • Coffee – I don’t drink coffee myself, but using a caffeine-free coffee in adds the perfect finishing touch to these delicious date balls!
  • Water – Our water comes from our private well.
The dry ingredients:
  • Oats – I love using rolled oats for texture.
  • Unsweetened cocoa powder – This gives the recipe its chocolate flavor.
  • Vanilla sugar – Adds extra sweetness.
  • Sea salt – You could also use table salt.
  • Shredded coconut, chopped nuts or seeds (for rolling).

How to Make Chocolate Energy Balls

Remove the seeds from the dates and mix them in a food processor until they break down. Add the remaining ingredients and blend again until a sticky dough forms. Shape the mixture into small balls, then roll them in shredded unsweetened coconut, chopped nuts, or seeds of your choice (for example, sunflower or chia seeds). Place the balls on a plate and refrigerate for about one hour before serving.

How to Store Date Balls

The date balls can be kept at room temperature for about 1–2 hours — perfect for short trips or serving guests. For longer storage, place them in the refrigerator, where they’ll stay fresh for about 3–5 days. If you don’t eat them within that time or want to save some for later, store them in a freezer bag or another airtight container and keep them in the freezer. It’s so nice to have something ready-made on hand that you can just take out whenever you need a quick treat!
