Memorizing Scripture By Heart
In our homeschooling, we always try to learn Bible verses by heart. We usually learn one to three Bible verses per month. I read or say the Bible verse out loud, and then one child repeats it, one at a time. Later on, we repeat old Bible verses that we have learned. Repetition is very important; otherwise, we all forget!
Another creative way of learning Bible verses is to have these verses printed out for the children to color. I strongly believe that children learn better when they use multiple senses. That is why these free printable coloring pages are now available for you!
Also, if you need something beautiful for them to color during the church service, this free PDF is great to have on hand! Scripture verses are a fun way for children to both learn about the word of God and practice their fine motor skills and reading. Furthermore, you could say they are doing a mini Bible study when they color these scripture coloring pages.
Below are the Bible verses included in the Christian coloring sheets. These are some of my favorite Bible verses:
Psalm 23:1
The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.
II Corinthians 5:17
Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.
Ephesians 4:32
And be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God in Christ forgave you.
Psalm 37:4
Delight yourself also in the Lord, and He shall give you the desires of your heart.
These beautiful verses are great for personal use and a perfect way for children to learn about the Bible. We are strengthened by learning Bible truths! Meditating on God’s word in our daily lives changes our thinking and helps us to move in the right direction. His word is our protection from sin.
When we memorize Bible verses like these, the Holy Spirit can remind us of them when we need them. Therefore, it is a great idea to memorize a meaningful Bible verse that you can remember when you need it. If you want to use printable bible verses, check out one of my previous posts here.
Making Bible Fun
Here are some ways to make Scripture fun for children:
Read aloud: Find fun and interesting Bible story books that are suited to the age of the child. Choose Bible stories that they can relate to and are interested in. Have the book in your lap and start reading. Oftentimes, the children will come by themselves and sit close to you to listen.
Memorize Bible verses: Have a set time each day for devotions with your children. We usually have devotions together in the morning and in the evening. Sometimes we forget, and sometimes we keep it short with only prayer. It is better to pray a short prayer than to do nothing at all. During devotions, you can repeat a short and helpful Bible verse that will equip your children with hope and strength for their future. Scripture cards can be very helpful. Role play Bible stories: Assign each child a role from a Bible story and guide them on what to do and how. Then, play a short role play with your kids, where they act out the Bible story they know well. Keep it short and fun. You could also let them dress up if they like. A hat, a shawl, and a rod make a big difference.
Watch Bible stories on television: For small children, I recommend simple animated stories, like The Beginner Bible. For older kids, I recommend Superbook.
Bible board game: This is a fun activity for kids. Provide your children with a fun and not too advanced Bible board game that you can play together. The questions shouldn’t be too hard; otherwise, they might give up. Help them succeed and know the answers.
Bible audiobook: This is a relaxing activity for you and your children since neither one of you needs to do anything. You can listen in the car or at home while the kids color or play with Lego. This is a great way for mothers to relax and find some time for themselves.
Church services for children: In our church, we have Sabbath schools designed to teach children of different ages about the Bible. The teachers are well-prepared and use materials that are fun and engaging for the kids. The children are divided into different groups by age, making it easier for the teacher to focus on each child.
Seasonal teaching: Teaching different subjects in different seasons makes the Bible more fun and interesting for children. For example, during the Christmas season, you can sing Christmas songs and decorate with Christmas trees and gifts. Find ways to make it fun and educational for the kids.
Sing Bible songs together: Engage the children in a church choir or sing with them at home. We usually include music in our family devotions once or twice per month. This is a precious time together when we sing Christian songs and play different instruments that they love. We have a marimba, a xylophone, an African wood djembe, a flute, a violin, and more. The kids take turns playing different instruments. It can be loud, but endure—it’s only a phase in their lives. They need this time period to practice and they will get better. Be patient.
