Developing language skills: Learning new words
When the child does not understand the meaning of a word, let them have a dictionary. Train the children to look up the words they do not understand. Show them by example, that you also do this. In that way it will become natural for them to look things up.
A fun way to learn complex words is to come up with different spelling games. I do not know about you, but in our home, learning comes much easier when through play. Board games are especially popular and games that requires movement. Ask your child what kind of game he or she likes that will make learning fun and engaging.
If you find it difficult to come up with new and fun games, try one of these:
- Hangman: Choose a word and have the child guess the letters. For each incorrect guess, draw part of a stick figure. The goal is to guess the word before the stick figure is fully drawn.
- Scrabble: Use letter tiles to create words on the board. This game encourages strategic thinking and vocabulary building.
- Mini Spelling Bee: Host a mini-spelling bee at home. Prepare a list of words for the kids to spell out loud. You can make it competitive or collaborative.
- Spelling Bingo: Create bingo cards with different spelling words. Call out the definition or read a sentence, and kids mark the word if they have it on their card.
- Rainbow Writing: Let the kids write each spelling word in different colors. This multisensory approach can help reinforce memory
- Memory Match: Create pairs of cards, each with a word and its corresponding picture or definition. Lay the cards face down and have kids flip them over to find matches.

Encourage a Love of Learning
The love of learning is crucial for the child’s long-term academic success and personal development. What I have experienced as a homeschool mom, is that when I do not push them academically in the early years, they develop a curiosity for life and a personal love of learning. Here are ten strategies to foster a positive attitude towards learning:
- Be a Role Model:
- Demonstrate your own curiosity and interest in learning. Children often imitate the behavior of adults, so if they see you enjoying learning, they are likely to develop a similar attitude.
- Make Learning Fun:
- Introduce educational activities that are enjoyable and engaging. Incorporate games, interactive projects, and hands-on experiments to make learning more exciting and less like a chore.
- Encourage Questions:
- Create an environment where asking questions is encouraged. Respond to their inquiries with patience and enthusiasm, fostering a sense of curiosity and exploration.
- Connect Learning to Real-Life Experiences:
- Relate lessons to everyday life to show the practical applications of what they’re learning. This helps them see the relevance and importance of acquiring new knowledge.
- Support Individual Interests:
- Pay attention to your child’s unique interests and strengths. Tailor learning experiences to align with their passions, as this can enhance motivation and a love for learning.
- Celebrate Achievements:
- Acknowledge and celebrate their accomplishments, no matter how small. Positive reinforcement fosters a sense of accomplishment and motivates children to continue putting effort into their studies.
- Provide a Comfortable Learning Environment:
- Create a comfortable and organized space for learning. Ensure they have the necessary tools and resources, and minimize distractions to help them focus.
- Encourage Reading:
- Foster a love for reading by providing access to a variety of books. Read together, and make regular visits to the library to explore new literature.
- Be Patient and Supportive:
- Recognize that every child learns at their own pace. Be patient and provide support, helping them overcome challenges without creating a negative association with learning.

- Teach the importance of perseverance and the idea that abilities can be developed through dedication and hard work. A growth mindset fosters resilience and a positive approach to learning.
